East Africa Through Maps
How the Geography of the Rift Valley has shaped life in Eastern Africa throughout Human History.
‘Why are the remains of early hominids mostly found in East Africa?’ ‘Why do East African
athletes dominate global long-distance running?’ ‘Why has Ethiopia been embroiled in
repeated cycles of violence that go back to the Middle Ages?’ ‘Why is Kenya one of the
world’s top tea and coffee producers and a leading geothermal energy country?’ “Why is
the Great Lakes region one of the most densely populated regions in the world? ‘What
drove the Brits to claim and colonize Kenya & Uganda at the Berlin conference?’ ‘What
geographic conditions in Eastern Africa facilitated the establishment of ancient African
empires like Axum, Kush, and Egypt?’
Join us on Tuesday 5th December for a conversation with Kenyan Geography where we will explore how the geography of the region has shaped various aspects of life through the use of illustrated maps. The maps will cover the climate, history, demographics, economy, conflict patterns, anthropology, and geopolitics of East and Horn of Africa, showing how each of these aspects of the region can be linked directly to the geography of the Rift Valley.
The conversation, moderated by Baraza's Lead Curator, Christine Mungai, seeks to join
dots from different fields of knowledge to create a bigger picture and open our eyes to a unique
perspective of viewing the region and the world in general.
