The History of Kenyan Fabrics, Clothing, and Textiles
Using an intersectional approach, the past, present, and future of fashion in Kenya will be discussed keeping in mind history, sustainability, and the role of the media through a series of 3 talks.
Part 1 of the trilogy will focus on the past and
explore the visual identities of indigenous populations, traditional techniques
and native materials that were used by these tribes, the value and uses of
fashion, and the effects of Colonization on these visual identities through a
presentation by The Watu Project.
A panel of experts from the fields of history, fashion, and media will be invited to further explore these themes and open a conversation about the effects of the historical roots of sustainability and how its connection in the world of sustainable fashion and the role of media in preserving this heritage as well as igniting the conversation about sustainability and the impact of our fashion choices on our world.
The
talk will be followed by a clothes swap facilitated by 25SW4P in order to
champion regenerative and sustainable fashion practices.
